Placement Requirements
Teaching Hours
Your practical learning journey requires access to a work placement within an inspiring further education setting throughout your course, providing authentic teaching experience that brings your learning to life. You'll need a minimum of 250 placement hours, with at least 150 dedicated to hands-on teaching practice that builds your confidence and skills.
Teaching Practice Hours
Your 150 hours of teaching practice create a rich, varied experience that includes at least 100 hours in your specialist subject area, with a minimum of 80 hours delivered face-to-face for that essential classroom connection. You'll also demonstrate high-quality online and remote teaching skills, plus gain valuable experience with 20 hours teaching either a different subject or at a different venue, which can include diverse professional activities beyond just teaching hours.
Non-Teaching Practice
Your remaining placement hours offer valuable insight into the broader professional role of FE educators through meaningful activities such as team meetings, lesson planning, student interviews, assessment meetings, classroom observations, and continuing professional development activities. These experiences give you a complete picture of life as an FE professional.
Mentors
Experience exceptional support through our comprehensive mentoring system, where you'll work with two dedicated staff members at your placement who are committed to your success and willing to complete any necessary training to support your journey.
Mentor 1 - Subject Specialist
Your subject specialist mentor brings expertise and passion for your teaching area, offering targeted subject-specific support that enhances your disciplinary knowledge and pedagogical skills. They'll dedicate 30 minutes per week to your development and actively engage in assessments, particularly focusing on the subject-specific aspects of your growth.
Mentor 2 - Local Pastoral Support
Your pastoral mentor provides essential general advice and support, creating a nurturing environment for your professional development (and may support a small group of trainee teachers for collaborative learning). With a recommended 30 minutes of support per week, this mentor maintains regular communication with MKLC regarding your ongoing progress and achievements.
Observations
Showcase your developing teaching expertise through a minimum of 10 comprehensive observations, ideally conducted with groups of at least ten learners to demonstrate your ability to manage and engage larger classes. Each observation lasts a minimum of 45 minutes and is conducted by either MKLC or your expert subject specialist placement mentor, providing valuable feedback and recognition of your progress. MKLC will complete two spaced observations throughout your course, with all observations strategically distributed across your qualification journey (minimum 10 days between each) to track your development, and you'll have the flexibility of up to two live remote delivery observations plus one remote assessment observation.
Location Requirements
Broaden your teaching horizons by experiencing placements in at least two different locations, giving you exposure to diverse teaching environments that enrich your professional perspective. You'll dedicate a minimum of 20 non-teaching hours to activities in your second location, though if a second physical location isn't feasible, you can gain this valuable diversity through teaching a different subject area or working within a different department at the same provider.
